Growing up with a strict upbringing left me feeling suffocated and unable to express myself.

 

As a result, I became a people pleaser and compromised my boundaries to please others. This led to exhaustion, resentment, and a lack of self.

 

My difficulties in communicating my needs and desires often translated into feelings of anger and guilt. As an adult, I found myself constantly accommodating others, being passive, and agreeing to things I didn't truly believe in.

 

I struggled to assert myself and set boundaries, which eventually lead to toxic relationships and shying away from career opportunities.

 

At 20 years old, I made the decision to leave my hometown in pursuit of a fresh start. Unfortunately, I quickly discovered that my personal issues and challenges had made the journey with me. I was still the “fixer/helper” in my relationships, and the boundaries between me and others were always blurry and inconsistent. I never asked questions or challenged people's decisions, and slowly, I was disappearing.

 

It was a painful realization, but it was also the first step towards my healing. I started ‘gentle boundary-ing’; taking small steps to stand up for myself by asking questions, and challenging decisions that didn't align with my values. With time, I started to see changes in myself. I was becoming stronger, more confident, and…  less angry.

 

I didn’t realize that every time I wasn’t advocating for my needs, I was choosing a slow burning anger growing within myself. This had to change.

 

From there, I reframed my negative beliefs, built the courage to communicate my needs assertively (but empathetically), and discovered how to manage my emotions and my discomfort when having “the conversation.” I learned how to set boundaries in my relationships, stand up for myself, and communicate effectively without compromising myself.

 

So, that’s one powerful truth I discovered “It is your right to discover your true self, express your desires, have your needs fulfilled, and build relationships that make you feel appreciated and accepted”:

 

Through my journey, I realized that healing takes time, and it's worth it. It also takes work, curiosity, and willingness to get to know yourself. It starts with saying “no” to what you're not, so you can gracefully be who you are.
